Ayurveda has a holistic approach when it comes to the treatment of maladies. It refuses to treat a symptom in isolation and takes each and every element of an individual in account before prescribing a solution. According to habits and physiological characteristics, a person is categorized into either of the three body types or Dosha — Vata, Pitta and Kapha. The body types enable one identify with their physical as well as emotional attributes. The identification process allows one to trace the dominant characteristics of their body and renders a more accurate and personalised treatment. Instead of a one-treatment-to-suit-it-all approach, Ayurvedic body types strive to trace the origin of complications and treat it accordingly.

Identify your Dosha for better health

All three body types possess decisive characteristics of its own. The three Doshas identify exclusive physical as well as emotion characteristics in humans. The imbalance of the elements cause anomaly or what is known as Vikruti. Hence, Ayurveda suggests a set of definite measures unique to each Dosha for a sound function of body and mind. One can easily identify their own body type among the three and the prescribed measures are certain to enable a healthy and peaceful lifestyle.

Vata — it is known as the king of all body types. People who possess this body type are generally known to be active, creative and have outward personality. They are physically underdeveloped; due to fast metabolism, they find it harder to gain weight. Such people are full of enthusiasm when in balance. However, Vikruti in Vata leads to anxiety and mood swings.

Vata is cold and dry by nature. Therefore, to neutralize it, warm and moist/oily diet is advisable. The counter elements harmonize the bodily elements and prevents Vikruti.

Pitta — Such people are known to be moderately built and possess a higher degree of intelligence. People who fall in this category are quick-learners and can yield good orators. However, an excessive Pitta in body can produce digestion problems which further may lead to irritable and anxious emotional disposition.

Pitta consists of the digestive enzymes. Excessive Pitta in body leads to excess heat generation in body which further creates imbalance. People of this body types are generally advised to consume nourishing and easy diet. Mild fruit juices are prescribed to neutralize the influx of bodily enzymes.

Kapha — Kapha people are usually calm and tranquil in nature. They have developed body structure and possess a moderate appetite. People who are categorised in this body type are believed to possess great memory although are slow but consistent learners. Vikruti in Kapha is often known to arise overweight, sloth and depression in people.

Kapha Dosha is inherently moist and warm. To balance, one is required to consume cold and dry items which can pacify the traits of Kapha. Regular exercise is also proven to reduce excessive Kapha in an individual.

To be able to identify with one’s own Dosha allows a better understanding of the body. The advised diet according to the body type enables one to produce better mental and physical temperament.
